How do I keep my red hair “that red” is a question I get all
the time. I must say that being a red head is as much and sometimes more work
than being a blonde. Some things you
should be prepared for are; having everything white be stained either red or pink,
touch ups every three weeks, comments (good and bad) and being stared at. Since
I have become a redhead I have gotten more compliments and comments about my
hair than I have EVER have in my entire life! However it is a lot of work to
keep it looking vibrant and healthy is a lot of work. Please consider the cost of up keep when you
decide to go red. It chaps my ass when I see people walking around with faded
colored hair looks like baby carrot throw up! GROSS!
When I started I had colored hair that was a darker brown
with some red highlights. I have tried many different brands of red and the l’
Oreal highlight HIGHLIGHTS for darker hair which I got at Sallys Beauty Supply.
I applied with a bowl and brush starting about 2 inches from my root. I used the “red” and “copper” mixed in equal
parts with 40 vol. I let this sit for about 45-60 minutes. I then did a second
application using the same formula and again started 2 inches from my root and
applied to the ends. I then went back and reapplied to my root area. I left
this for about 45 minutes. After my hair because it had been colored so many
times was lifted uneven and it was dry. I then applied a treatment mask over my
hair. I then gave my hair a little bit
of a break. My hair looked pretty good and was really red but there were a few
spots here and there were not as bright as other but it all blended really well.
BEFORE
Every few weeks I then went in for a “retouch” because I was
a little crazy about not wanting roots. Every time I used the highlight color
with 40 vol and my hair started to feel like CRAP! But got brighter each time
however after 5 months and coloring my hair this way I had to change. I should
have changed my routine months before but I am lazy!
ROOTS!
My current routine to keep my hair bright to doing a semi-permanent
“red” or “magenta” (YES pink but once you put it over red hair it brightens
everything up!) every 3 weeks or so to keep my hair bright. I mix the
semi-permanent color with my favorite conditioner and leave it on for an hour.
This keeps the color bright. The semi also covers my dark roots enough to where
they do not bother me. Every 6-8 weeks I then do my roots. I HIGHLY recommend having
someone else do you roots for you to ensure no overlap which causes breakages.
I also do not wash my hair every day. I wash my hair about 1-2 times weekly using
a red shampoo and I also do a treatment mask about once a week.
Have a question? Comment and I will try to answer as best as
I can
